Migration in Northern Ohio
Yes, we will see lots of birds, but this may be a slightly different perspective of migration through Northern Ohio. We’ll take a quick look at the geologic history of Ohio, how the landscape was shaped, in particular Lake Erie. Habitats, such as wetlands, woodlands, shrub-scrub and human modified lands will be reviewed along with weather conditions that affect migrants. Lastly we’ll discuss many species that may be seen or use the Northern Ohio area on migration. Get out your checklist and enjoy!
About Nancy Howell
Nancy Howell is an educator, now retired from The Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Nancy has been watching birds since she was 8 years old and attended the Spring Bird Walks. She now manages the leaders of the Spring Bird Walks and leads one of the routes. Nancy has been volunteering with Black Swamp Bird Observatory’s spring and fall migration bird-banding site for over 20 years. Nancy is on the Board of Western Cuyahoga Audubon and leads many walks for the organization.
Nancy likes birding in her local area and eBird has become a wonderful tool for keeping records which adds to the bird database of the local patches. As the compiler for the Lakewood Circle Christmas Bird Count, Nancy has grown the number of CBC participants who have increased the number of species sighted for the Count Circle. We seem to have better birders. Now we have to work to protect birds, and their habitats along migration routes.
